Benedetti & Grigi

Meet the Winemaker

La Terra

La Famiglia

This is a story of two families with a long history of success in agriculture who came together with a shared vision — to create exceptional Umbrian varietal wines. Umberto Benedetti and Daniele Grigi joined forces, built a team of exceptional talent in viniculture, winemaking, and gave them the best vineyards and equipment available.

Their 68 hectares (~160 acres) are spread between high and low elevation sites. Fruit from the high elevation, older vineyards are utilized to produce Umbrian wines under the Benedetti & Grigi label, while the younger, lower elevation vineyards are harvested to produce wines under the La Gaita del Falco label.

The cantina is located in La Polzella, just 4 km outside the ancient hilltop town of Montefalco. In-house winemaker, Matteo Basili (shown on the left with Umberto Benedetti), has the finest equipment at his disposal to create wines that perfectly express the best natural characteristics of this historic region.

Benedetti & Grigi Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG – Sagrantino is an ancient varietal grown around the villages of Montefalco and Bevagna. Highly tannic while young, the aged and finished wine is intensely complex with great depth and character. The high polyphenol and tannic acid content makes it a perfect candidate for aging. This huge beast was crafted from 100% Sagrantino fruit from the hillside vineyards around the village of Montefalco. Following temperature controlled maceration on the skins for 30 days, the wine was then refined in Slovenian oak casks for 26 months and another 12 months in the bottle. Strap yourself in your chair, and enjoy this intensely complex red with strong cheeses, bold pasta dishes, wild boar, game, and roasted red meats. Best served at 65F in a large format glass. Drink now or cellar for 15-20 years.
