The journey began in the 1960s when Novilio Mariani, along with his family, moved to the picturesque region of Cervognano in Montepulciano where he embraced winemaking. Their area has been renowned since ancient times for its natural suitability for cultivating Sangiovese.
In the early years, wine was produced for family consumption and the large quantities of grapes cultivated were sold to the local cooperative winery. La Combàrbia was born In 2016, by Gabriele Florio, the grandson of Novilio Mariani, who brought his passion for the art of winemaking along with the aim of holding firm to his grandfather’s traditions and ideas for creating genuine Sangiovese wines that express a contemporary and territorial style.
In Italian “combarbio” literally means crossroads, a place where paths converge and diverge. In Tuscan dialect, to go to the Combarbia meant gathering, often in rooms adjacent to the village church, to enjoy a carefree evening together after a hard day's work, sharing wine and stories.
La Combàrbia is located precisely in the hamlet of Cervognano (the best production area for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG as the soils here are clay).
