2019 Macchie Santa Maria "Signifer" Fiano di Avellino DOCG

  • One of Italy’s most ancient white varietals, along with Falanghina, Fiano was first noted in Roman times by Pliny the Elder. It is found in the southern region of Campania in the hills around the town of Avellino. The De Santis Family at Macchie Santa Maria Cantine has been cultivating Fiano for generations. Grandson, Oreste, has named their Fiano wine Signifer, the standard bearer of Roman legions, and a very appropriate title for this ancient white.

Signifer is a robust Fiano with wonderful, intense aromas of florals and a characteristic hint of hazelnut. The wine shows bright yellow hues in the glass, and lands on the palate with a hint of toasted hazelnuts and fresh, slightly acidic finish.

Serve this intense white at 55F in a large bowl glass to fully appreciate its aromas. Pair with fish first courses, shellfish, white meat dishes and young cheeses.
