2017 Benedetti & Grigi Montefalco Rosso DOC

Montefalco Rosso is an incredibly rich, red blend unique to Umbria.  Winemaker Matteo Basili crafted this full-bodied red from 70% Sangiovese, 20% Sagrantino, and 10% Merlot fruit grown in the hillside vineyards around Montefalco.  The fruit was hand picked and crushed at the cellar within two hours of harvest.  Following temperature controlled maceration below 30C, the wine is finished for 12 months in French oak barrels and bottle aged an additional 6 months. This wine presents ruby red in the glass with violet hues around the rim, aromas of forest fruits, blackberries and ripe cherries.  This big red lands on the palate with a splash of blackberry and plum jam and a hint of cocoa.  The big, round mouthfeel is well-balanced fruit, tannins and acids.  Enjoy this rich, harmonious red with bold pasta dishes, red meats, wild boar and strong cheeses.  Best served at 65F in a large format glass. Drink now or cellar for 7-10 years.
